This story takes place in a small country town thirty five years after chattel servitude which brought Blacks into the time of indentured servitude and sharecropping. The main character, Sally Ann, is a young poet from Albany Georgia born June 12, 1900. After a drastic event that angers Sally Ann, she moves north to Detroit in the 1930’s. She was hoping for a better chance of a new life in the booming industrial revolution, but when Sally Ann gets to Detroit she sees that life for the Negro living in the north is no better than life in the south.

This author creates a quite interesting story with his use of of what he has coined as “Narpoefolk”, a style of writing consisting of narrative storytelling, poetry, and folktales blended in a unique way.
